WHY WE HAVE TO CARE OUR SKIN MORE IN WINTERS?
Introduction:-
Our skin is body's largest organ that is made up of water protein fats and minerals. Skin is responsible to protect the body from germs and helps in regulation of body temperature. Nerves present in the skin helps the body to feel sensations like called cold and hot.
Along with the time the quality of skin in human being depletes as the age increases, especially in winter season there are many skin problems that people face regularly, most of the people who live in the areas where there is seasonal weather changes may develop dry, itchy, dead skin rashes during winters. Winter rashes refers to extremely dehydrated and dry skin which is basically due to the low humidity level and cold temperatures.
Causes of winter rashes:-
The main two components of the skin that help it to stay moist and to enhance itself are water and natural oils. Winter rashes generally occurs when too much moisture is used by the skin during the cold weather or winters. Cold and dry air can absorb the water and oil from the skin, some of the common conditions that are caused during winters are:-
- Dermatitis- dermatitis generally refers to any inflammation of the skin, in dermatitis dry itchy patches form on the skin. Poor circulation or exposure to any Harsh chemical or an infection can cause dermatitis.
- Cold urticaria- this is a rare skin condition which causes swollen, itchy bumps that are called hives on this scale after exposure to the cold weather.
- Psoriasis- cold and dry weather can lead to trigger psoriasis flares. Other triggers are stress, smoking and infections.
- Use moisturizer daily- petroleum jelly for the cream based moisturizer are the best option to use in winters rather than lotions, moisturizer helps your skin to become moist and helps the skin to prevent the loss of oils from the skin.
- Maintain proper hygiene- stay hygienic even in the winters try to you wash your face hands feets twice a day, but do not overdo it as too much cleaning can remove the skin's natural moisturizers, try to apply chemical free skin products.
- Dont use hot water- do not use hot water to wash your skin rather take short lukewarm showers and non detergent based cleaners to clean your skin.
- Avoid extreme cold- cold temperature can cause many skin disorders as we have discussed above try to avoid extreme cold, always cover your face and use a petroleum jelly as a skin protector, in cold weather if you observe any colour changes in hands or feet along with the pain and ulceration see your doctor immediately.
- Dont smoke- smoking can make diskin look much older and can lead to wrinkles, smoking can lead to decrease the blood flow of the skin and can make skin pale yellow, this also depletes the oxygen and their important nutrients that is important to the skin during winters.
- Eat healthy diet- eating healthy diet help you look and feel the best, try to eat plenty of Vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Always include diet rich in fish oil or supplement and low in unhealthy fats, avoid processed and refined carbohydrates.
- Take extra care- the skin gets more fragile during the winter season so if there is any skin condition like eczema or psoriasis make sure to avoid any allergens or irritants that can make the condition worse.
